My transition from porcelain to black clay started in the factory. When using clay, I prefer to choose a clay body that has the surface and color that I want, rather than apply a paint or ceramic skin to the surface. As part of my residency, I altered the vitreous casting body used for their toilets and sinks to create a vitreous black slip.

These pieces are still based on genre paintings, but strongly reference drawing as well. Whiteness in my work is this- absence, loss, void, and isolation. Blackness in my work is both presence and absence. It is a query regarding stability, permanence and the rendering of space.
